Let us walk you through some of the basics with using the FREE 'LITE' version or the registered version of Mokum Mail. NOTE: click on pictures to see a larger image.
Assuming you were able to download and install MM, the first thing you need to do is make sure that you disable Outlook Express from automatically downloading messages every so many minutes. Go to Outlook Express and click on tools/options and make sure these are not checked.
Before you start Mokum Mail for the first time...
Click HERE for complete information on getting the information necessary to set up your E-mail account(s) in Mokum Mail. Jot down the server information, your log-in name and your pass word on a piece of paper. This is a simple one time job... MM will ask you to complete the data of at least one server or else the program cannot work. You can define an unlimited number of servers.
Now let's start Mokum Mail...
As you double click on the Icon (the little mill) on your desktop, MM will open. After completing the server data you will see MM's Main window. The next thing you will want to check is your Preferences by clicking on the Preference Command. You will see several different setting options you can change if you want. If you are happy with the default settings, simply click OK and close this box. By default, your ' Tool Tips ' will be set at "Yes" thus allowing you to see an explanation for most button functions when you hover over them with your mouse. The Preference Options are explained more fully in the INFO.
With your mail account now defined, next you would click on the 'CHECK' button to download the message headers from any server you have marked as ' Active '. OR... alternatively you can click on the server at the right. When you use the ' CHECK ' button, Mokie will only check the servers you have marked as ' Active ' in your Server box. This way, if you have multiple accounts, you can check them one at a time by simply clicking the chosen account.
NOTE: If the "Should Mokie automatically check my Active Accounts at start-up?" option has been set to Yes in Preferences, this will happen automatically when you open MM!
How To Get Rid Of SPAM
This screen is what you will see when you download your message headers... By default, you will see your message headers in a split screen. In the top screen are Unknown Senders, or simply those not in your address book. The Known list below contains messages from those who are in your address book.
*NOTE* The 4 buttons I have boxed in red will change the configuration of your list. You can switch it to All Unknown, All Known, Split Unknown/Known (as you first see), or All Known and Unknown in one. You may want to go back and forth as you are marking messages for various functions.
For example... I have clicked on the RED list view above which shows me the list view of all Unknown senders only. You can then either Black list (if using that feature) or MARK to delete messages you don't want. You can also drag and mark many messages at once as you can see in the picture.
Now that these messages are marked, when you leave the program you will be prompted to delete them, thus not downloading them to your PC. After marking your Unknowns, I would then either switch back to the Split list or to the list showing me only my Known senders. And again... you will find more detailed explanations in the INFO files.
Viewing a Message
Double click on a message header or Single click on the ' View ' button to the left to open your message in the Preview (plain text) window.
Here you see a vertical menu bar either at the right or the left (depending on YOUR set-up). The message can be saved to your Inbox to view and reply to later, it can be forwarded as an attachment to somebody else, you can view it in MM's own browser where you will see it in HTML format , you can reply now to the message, and you can UNPACK the message amongst other options.
When viewed in the browser, the same message above would look like this.... You can also REPLY to a message from this screen as well as use the Up/Down Green or Red arrows.
A Simple Reply
Now let's do a simple 'REPLY' to one of our messages. This we will do right from the server without downloading the message onto our PC. This is handy for a quick reply when you do not see the need to save that message! Double click on a message header or single click on the ' View ' button to the left of the message. You will see the message in plain text... Then click on the REPLY icon and you will now be in the Quick reply window.
The message you are replying to is in the quote/unquote tags. Underneath that you will type your reply.
This picture shows you where you can change the text color and font for your message. You can choose a background stationery or a mail me picture, add a midi file and or wav file, by browsing to a folder where you have them kept. Actually there is MUCH you can do from here using the Theme Window and all of the different HTML buttons but I can not begin to explain quickly all of their functions. With your tool tips and the INFO file, you will soon discover for yourself! ;-))
Once you are done, click on the 'VIEW in BROWSER' button to see what your message will look like.
If all is well you can click on SEND from the browser window OR click on the 'DONE' button at the top right and you are back in the reply window.
Add to your message if needed, then simply click on
the green 'SEND NOW' button on the bottom. (Or you can click on the red 'SEND LATER' button which will put your message in the OutBox to send later.)
MM's Address Book
When you did a reply, your friend's address was automatically
added to the 'Friend's Database or address book'. When creating a New Message (if you
have NOT replied to this person before), you will first need to add their
info by clicking on the friend's button.
the info relating to the address book and adding data. Once you have
that done, simply select your addressee, write your message (choosing your settings as we did in the Reply message), click ' View in Browser ' to see it, click ' Done ' to go back to the edit window and then click ' Send ' or ' Send Later '.
Back To The Main Window
I have shown you how to save a message to your Inbox individually...by doubleclicking on a message header and viewing it in plain text and clicking the 'SAVE THIS MESSAGE' button. You can also use the 'D/L' button from the main window to save (download) multiple messages at once!
Mark the messages you want to download to your Inbox. If you have many together, you can use the 'drag' to mark all at once. Click on the D/L command up top and all these messages will be downloaded to your MM Inbox. Once downloaded they will automatically be marked for you to delete.
Creating A New Message
The next thing for this 'Quick Start Info' I will show you is from the Main window (where you see your headers); You want to write a NEW message to someone (not a reply) so you simply click on the 'CREATE NEW MESSAGE' button at the right (or left depending on your set-up). Your address book will pop up first where you select your addressee. After you have made your selection, you will see this screen with your Hi and Bye already in place.
Select colors, music and stationery, type your message , insert your subject and then click on the 'SEND' button.
That's all there is to it!
Using the THEME window is where you can make themes, change your default stationery etc. Again....there is a lot of information and explanations in the INFO files and I highly recommend taking a look! There really is no way to tell you everything in one tutorial....
Finally...
One last note here:
In order to keep a Text record of what you have sent,
make sure the 'LOG' button is checked. This is located under the
'Friend's Address Book' button. And with the sending of any message, you are given the option to save a copy of each message (in full HTML) in the Sent folder.
I hope this has been a help to you in getting started with Mokum Mail.
